PGA WEST Rolls Out Cutting-Edge Robotic Lawn Mowers
At first glance, it looks like a kid-sized red Corvette. But in reality, it's a game-changing innovation reshaping the private club landscape. PGA WEST® has invested in cutting-edge technology with the introduction of four Automower® Robotic Lawn Mowers from Swedish-based Husqvarna. These autonomous mowers are efficient, eco-friendly, and designed to streamline golf course maintenance.
"Our intent is not to replace jobs," says Denver Hart of PGA WEST. "This allows us to free up team members to focus on other important tasks on the property."
With GPS navigation and customizable programming, the mowers can be set to operate at any time of day or night, in any direction, while avoiding sensitive areas like garden beds and drainage holes.
"They're lightweight but powerful, able to climb aggressive terrain and detect obstacles like fallen tree branches," Hart adds. "They also function well in rainy weather and withstand extreme heat."
A major advantage of these battery-powered mowers is their environmental impact. Emission-free and nearly noiseless, they also improve turf health by creating micro-clippings that naturally fertilize the soil—eliminating the need for bagging and disposal.
"With the frequency of mowing, those clippings fall into the grass canopy, replenishing nitrogen and refeeding the soil," explains Hart.
The response from PGA WEST Members and grounds staff has been overwhelmingly positive. By handling routine mowing, the Automowers® allow the crew to focus on more complex tasks.
Looking ahead, Hart sees even greater potential: "If Automowers® are constantly out there mowing, the driving range would never need to close—keeping it open for practice at all times."
