Honoring the Game, Supporting the Future
PGA WEST® Club Members Adrien and Jay Agoado couldn't believe their good fortune when they were selected as Honorary Observers during the Saturday rounds of The American Express 2025.
"Jay and I were thrilled to be chosen and even more excited when we learned we'd be walking alongside Justin Thomas and Jason Day," Adrien enthuses.
As part of the honorary observer experience, participants were encouraged to stay close to the walking scorer—a tip the Agoados followed closely. That's how they met Madigan Escobar, a dedicated volunteer for The American Express golf tournament.
At just 17, Madigan is already an impressive golfer, nearly a scratch player. Homeschooled, he works at Desert Falls Country Club, where he gets opportunities to play the game he loves. He has also been volunteering at The American Express for the past five years.
As an executive search recruiter, Adrien has a keen eye for recognizing talent and strong character. Her first impression of Madigan?
"He was wise beyond his years," she says. "He was focused, respectful, and doing exactly what he had been instructed to do—flawlessly."
But what really stood out was when Madigan shared, "I am who I am today because of First Tee."
A Connection Through First Tee
Madigan has been part of First Tee – Coachella Valley since he was just four years old. The nonprofit youth development organization integrates golf with life skills programs designed to build confidence, resilience, and inner strength.
Adrien first learned about First Tee through a ladies' group she belongs to, which created and donated a raffle item for the Club's Ladies' Golf Association (LGA) Soulheim event (unrelated to the LPGA Solheim Cup). The fundraiser—which featured a pre-party, golf tournament, and luncheon—raised more than $15,000 for First Tee.
A Round at the Stadium Course
During their conversation, Adrien asked Madigan which PGA WEST course he'd most love to play. Without hesitation, he answered, "The Stadium Course." Having walked it many times with different players, he was eager for the chance to play it himself.
Inspired by his passion, Adrien and Jay are making it happen. They arranged for Madigan to join them for a round this February 16 on the Pete Dye Stadium Course, which has been wowing golfers since its expansive restoration.
A Bright Future in Golf
Madigan dreams of going pro one day, and after meeting him, Adrien is confident in his potential.
"Based on Madigan's attitude and composure, I have no doubt he'll achieve his goals—with the continued support of our community," she says.
