Type of Group Golf Events

Tee times – Reservations held for any number of golfers.  Each golfer is assigned a tee time.  La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA WEST send foursomes off in 9 minute intervals. La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA WEST does not allow fivesomes.

Shotgun Start – Each group is assigned to a different starting hole with all golfers beginning and finishing play at the same time.  La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA WEST require a minimum of 40 players for a shotgun start.

Split Tee – Reservations starting on #1 and #10 tees.

Scramble – A Scramble is a fun team format that keeps all players involved throughout the round. All players tee off then select the best tee shot, after the tee shot has been selected all players play their ball from that spot, this is continued until the hole is completed.

Best Ball – Best Ball is also a fun team format that keeps all players involved as they play their own ball throughout the day, the one or sometimes two players’ best score on each hole is recorded and then totaled upon completion of play for a team score.

Stroke Play – An individual format where all players play their own ball for the entire round. Stroke play events can also be setup for more then one round and can be scored with or without handicaps.

Match Play – Another form of individual play that is played by holes. The player that takes the fewest strokes wins each hole until a player is eliminated.

Skins Game – A Skins Game is played individually or in teams against others, a Skin is won by a player or team that has the lower score on any hole.

Horse Race – Often called a Derby, the Horserace format can be played individually or as two person teams alternating shots, all players/teams tee-off in a pre-determined order on the 1st tee, the player/team with the highest score each hole is eliminated, all players/teams continue playing holes until there is only one player/team standing.  (Horse Races are available at La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA WEST for a minimal fee.)

Special Contests

Long Drive – The player who hits his or her ball the farthest on their drive and keeps it in the fairway is declared the winner.

Closest to the Pin – Closest to the Pin Contests are held on Par 3 holes.  The player who hits his or her tee shot closest to the pin wins.

Straightest Drive – This contest is held on a hole that is long and fairly straight. A line will be setup down the center of the fairway. The object is to be the golfer that hits the ball closest to the line. A marker will be provided by group coordinator to identify the winner upon completion of play.  

Longest Putt – A tape measure & contest marker will be provided to track the player who makes the longest putt on a pre-determined hole.
